Small Master Bedroom Ideas That Don’t Feel Cramped

Most small master bedrooms aren’t too small. They’re overfurnished. A queen bed plus two 26 inch nightstands already uses 112 inches of an 11 foot wall. That leaves 20 inches for everything else, before anyone adds a dresser.

So this guide starts with measurements and gets to furniture after.

Quick answer

Give yourself 24 inches beside the bed, more if you can get it. Thirty to 36 is where it stops feeling tight. A dresser wants 36 in front, so you’re not dodging the drawer every morning. And shop by wall. We’d only put a long dresser where about 69 inches are free; anything narrower gets a tall chest.

Start With Wall Widths and Walkways

Width is the first number to get. Door swings and the closet come next, since both use floor you can’t furnish.

The Sleep Foundation puts the comfortable minimum at about 24 inches per side. Dimensions.com goes further, with 30 inches as its minimum and 36 as the number it recommends.

Say the wall is 11 feet, so 132 inches. Center a 60 inch queen on it and each side gets 36. An upholstered frame runs a little wider, so plan on a bit less.

Pick the Layout That Fits the Room Shape

Layout

Best for

How to set it up

Centered bed

Square rooms, 10 by 10 ft or larger

Headboard on the longest solid wall, one narrow nightstand per side

Offset bed

Narrow rooms, or a closet on one side

Slide the bed toward one wall and keep 36 in on the side you use most

Bed under the window

Rooms where doors break up the other walls

Low headboard below the sill, lined curtains

In narrow rooms, offset is the layout we recommend most. You give up symmetry. It’s an easy trade, though, because the walk to the closet stays clear.

Size the Dresser to the Wall, Not the Wardrobe

Two medium pieces on two walls take more floor than one piece on one wall, even when they hold the same clothes.

Where a Wardrobe Fits

One closet for two people almost always overflows, and a wardrobe is the usual fix. We like it next to the bedroom door. There’s hardly ever a window on that wall, so a tall piece there doesn’t cost you any light. Check the door swing before you order, because wardrobe doors can hit the bed frame.

Then split the load. Folded clothes go in the dresser, hanging ones in the wardrobe, and neither piece has to get bigger.

When One Wide Dresser Works Better

A long dresser earns its place only when one wall has about 69 inches clear.

The Savanna 7 drawer dresser is 56.88 inches wide, 31.34 inches high and 17.72 inches deep. Seven drawers on metal roller glides, each with a safety stop. The main drawers are 24.61 by 15.16 inches inside, so two stacks of folded jeans sit side by side.

Leave 36 inches of floor in front of it. Less than that and you’ll be stepping sideways every time a drawer opens.

Compare widths across all SICOTAS dressers. Our guide to choosing a dresser for a small bedroom covers single wall placement.

Anchor it

Don’t skip this one. CPSC says new dressers come with anti tip devices and those should go in right away. Screw the strap into a stud, and fill the bottom drawers first.

Narrow Nightstands for Tight Bed Gaps

Bedside space is usually the first thing to crowd up. Measure from the side of the bed frame to the wall and pick from there.

The Savanna rattan nightstands set of 2 sits right in the middle row. Each one is 19.7 inches wide, 15 inches deep and 25.2 inches tall, with a single drawer that’s 16.3 inches wide inside. Drop one into a 24 inch gap and about 4 inches are still free.

Pairs don’t have to match, either. With less than 18 inches on one side, a floating shelf goes there and the nightstand goes on the roomy side.

Move the lamp to the wall, too. HGTV notes that a wall mounted light frees the whole tabletop.

Keep the Bed Low and the Walls Quiet

A lower bed helps more than you’d think. Swap the box spring for a platform frame and the mattress drops a few inches. That’s a few more inches of bare wall, and the ceiling looks taller for it. We’d lose the footboard too. From the doorway it’s the first thing you see, and it sits right where you walk.

Color does the rest. We tend to keep walls, trim and closet doors in one color family (warm white with oatmeal trim is hard to get wrong). Hang the rod just under the ceiling and a few inches wider than the window, and the window looks bigger than it is. A tall mirror leaned next to it will bounce some of that daylight around, too.

Final Thoughts

Most of this comes down to two numbers: 30 to 36 inches of walkway, and the free width of each wall. Buy to those. Narrow wall, tall chest. Long clear wall, one long dresser. Tight bed gap, a nightstand near 20 inches.

You’ll find width, depth and height on every product page at SICOTAS furniture for compact rooms. Check them against your walls with a tape measure before ordering, because a dresser that’s 3 inches too wide is a pain to send back.

FAQs

How can I make a small master bedroom feel bigger?

Clear the floor. What really makes a bedroom feel cramped is bumping into things, usually a dresser corner on the way to the closet.

So guard two spots: 24 inches beside the bed and 36 in front of the dresser. After that, hunt for pieces that do the same job twice. Two short dressers can usually become one tall chest on a narrow wall. A table lamp can become a wall sconce, and a gallery of small frames can become one large mirror near the window.

Try this: put one piece in the hallway for a week. If nobody misses it, it doesn’t come back.

What is the minimum size for a master bedroom?

70 square feet, by code. The City of Seattle code interpretation says a habitable room needs at least 70 square feet and has to measure at least 7 feet in every direction. So a room that’s 7 feet wide must run at least 10 feet long.

Comfort is a different story. Once you add clearance around the bed, a queen room comes out near 106 square feet and a king room near 119. For a queen, that’s roughly 10 by 11 feet.

Worth knowing: width matters more than area. A 9 foot wide room still takes a queen with 24 inch sides.

Can a king size bed fit in a small master bedroom?

Sometimes. Kings are 76 inches wide. Add 24 inches per side and the room has to be at least 10 feet 4 inches across.

The king bedroom layouts on Dimensions.com call for 11 feet 4 inches to 12 feet 4 inches of width. Go below that and the dresser tends to end up blocking a door or the closet. A queen hands back 16 inches of floor, and in a tight room that’s usually worth more than the wider mattress.

Keeping the king? Then lose the footboard and the bench, choose nightstands about 20 inches wide, and put the reading lights on the wall.

What is the best layout for a small master bedroom?

Shape decides it more than size. A square room usually takes a centered bed on the longest solid wall, so both sides are easy to reach.

Narrow rooms work better offset. Push the bed toward one wall and you free 30 to 36 inches on the side you actually use, usually the closet side. Some rooms have a door or a window on every wall. There, the bed can go under the window, as long as the headboard stays below the sill and nothing tall goes on that wall.

Tip: before moving anything heavy, tape the bed and dresser outlines on the floor and walk through your morning once.

Should I choose a tall or wide dresser for a small bedroom?

Tall, for most small rooms. A chest that goes up instead of out can hold a whole wardrobe on 30 to 40 inches of wall. That’s about the gap most rooms have between a door and a corner.

Wide only wins when one wall has about 69 inches free plus 36 inches of floor in front. Then a 57 inch, seven drawer dresser can replace a dresser and a chest, and its top holds the mirror and lamp. Depth matters too. Past about 18 inches deep, a dresser starts eating into the walkway.

Either way, anchor it. Into a stud, not just drywall, with the heavy stuff in the bottom drawers.

What colors make a small bedroom look bigger?

Light colors with low contrast. Warm white and pale greige are the usual picks. Paint the trim the same shade and the corners stop drawing the eye.

Dark paint can still work. We’ve seen deep green on just the headboard wall look great, as long as the other three stay light, and navy does the same job. Pick matte or eggshell, though. Glossy walls throw lamp glare around at night.

For depth, we’d reach for texture before a second color. Rumpled linen bedding, or woven rattan on the drawer fronts. One accent color is plenty, and it looks intentional once it shows up twice, say in a throw and a framed print.

How do I add storage to a small master bedroom on a budget?

Use what’s already there. The space under the bed, the wall above eye level and the back of the closet door all cost very little.

Off season clothes go in lidded bins under the bed. Above the door, one high shelf with a couple of baskets holds the stuff you only use a few times a year, like spare bedding. Slim velvet hangers are cheap, and they free up a surprising amount of rail. And if the bed is due for replacement anyway, a lift up storage base is worth the extra cost.

One rule: declutter first. Buying bins before you sort just means storing things you don’t use.
