Bedrooms rarely run out of floor before they run out of drawers. The chair in the corner turns into a closet, cables pile up beside the lamp, and last winter's duvet sits on the closet floor in its plastic bag until someone trips on it.
Baskets help a bit. Furniture helps more, so that's how this guide is organized, one piece at a time, with sizes taken from SICOTAS product pages on November 1, 2026.
Sort the Clutter Before You Shop
We usually suggest one boring job before anyone shops. Dump whatever's lying around on the bed in four heaps: folded clothes, nightstand stuff, things on hangers and bedding. In our experience one heap ends up about twice the size of the rest.
That heap tells you what to buy. Nine times out of ten it's folded clothes, which calls for one of the bedroom dressers with storage rather than another basket.

Dressers: Check Drawer Height First
Listings make a big deal of drawer count. The number we look for is the inside height, since a chunky sweater in a shallow drawer gets flattened every single time you shove it shut.
Two Savanna dressers make the point well. The Savanna 7 drawer dresser has a main drawer 6.88 inches tall inside, plenty for rolled tees and socks, and the extra drawer means underwear can have one to itself. The 6 drawer dresser that comes in the Savanna bedroom set has one drawer less, but it's 8.59 inches tall inside. That's the one we'd pick for jeans and knitwear.

Both have metal roller glides and drawer safety stops, and both are almost 57 inches wide. That width catches people out. Take away the window, a radiator and the closet door, and plenty of bedrooms don't have five clear feet of wall left.
Nightstands: Pick Drawers Over Shelves
Small clutter collects on the nightstand faster than anywhere else, and an open shelf underneath just gives it a second level. Whatever sits on the shelf, the cables, the three books you're halfway through, the hand cream, is on display all day.
The nightstand that comes with the Savanna set is 23.6 inches wide, 15.4 deep and 22 high, with two drawers. Its main drawer is 7 inches tall and 20.6 inches wide inside, which takes a charger, glasses and a paperback with room left over. The Sleep Foundation suggests about 24 inches of space on each side of the bed, so a nightstand this size slots into that gap with a bit under half an inch to spare.
Wardrobes Are for Clothes That Hang
Some things just won't fold. Blazers, dresses, shirts you've ironed. If the closet rail is jammed, or there's no closet, a freestanding wardrobe gives you a second rail with no building work.
It's a big piece, though, so measure for it first. The wardrobe in the Savanna dresser, wardrobe and nightstand set is 70.86 inches tall, 40 wide and 20.98 deep. Stand it next to the dresser from the same set, which is 56.85 inches wide, and the pair takes up 96.85 inches of wall, a little over eight feet.
Before ordering one, open your closet and count. If most of what's in there could be folded, we'd put a second dresser on that wall instead.
Spare Bedding: Bench or Storage Bed
Duvets are the awkward bit. A queen folded in thirds is too thick for most dresser drawers, and on an open shelf it sags into a lump. We've had the best luck with two options.
The first is a storage bench at the foot of the bed. It takes one spare set of bedding, and you get a seat for putting your shoes on. The second is a storage bed, with base drawers for weekly sheets or a lift up platform for winter bedding. Skip the bench if it leaves under 30 inches to walk past the end of the bed.
Measure the Floor, Not Just the Wall
Here's something we see a lot. The dresser fits the wall perfectly, but the bottom drawer only comes out ten inches before it hits the bed frame. After a couple of weeks nobody bothers opening it, and the clothes go back on the chair.
So measure the floor too. We work with roughly 36 inches in front of a dresser, enough for a 15 inch deep drawer and a person standing behind it. Keep the 24 inches beside the bed from earlier, and leave at least 30 on the path from the door. Wardrobe doors need to swing all the way open as well.
There's a safety side as well. The National Institute on Aging recommends keeping walkways tidy and arranging furniture so you aren't stepping around it, which matters most at 3 a.m. with the lights off. A few strips of painter's tape on the floor, with the drawers' reach marked out too, will show you whether a layout works before anything is delivered.
Anchor Dressers and Wardrobes
Safety note: Under the CPSC rule for clothing storage units, dressers and wardrobes made after September 1, 2023 have to pass stability tests and come with an anti tip device. Fit it on the day you build the piece, not later.
The rule applies to freestanding units at least 27 inches tall that weigh 30 pounds or more and hold at least 3.2 cubic feet. At 31.34 inches tall and 112 to 114 pounds, both Savanna dressers fall under it easily. Putting jeans and sweaters in the bottom drawers and lighter things up top also keeps the weight low.
Declutter, Then Measure
This is the step most people skip. A new dresser full of jeans that stopped fitting two years ago hasn't fixed anything. We'd empty the drawers and closet, set aside whatever hasn't been worn since this time last year, and only then get the tape measure out. Our small bedroom organization guide covers that sorting in more detail.
Final Thoughts
For a typical bedroom our list is short. One dresser that fits the folded clothes. A nightstand with two drawers on each side of the bed. A wardrobe, but only if the closet rail really is full. Then a bench or a storage bed for bedding. A fifth piece rarely helps. It usually becomes one more place for mail to pile up.
Before ordering, check three numbers: the wall, the floor in front with the drawers out, and the height, since anything 27 inches or taller needs anchoring. You'll find all of them on each product page at SICOTAS.
FAQs
How Do I Maximize Storage in a Bedroom?
Start with the pieces you'd own anyway. A bed, a dresser and a couple of nightstands are going in the room regardless, so buying versions with drawers adds a lot of storage without adding anything to the floor.
After that, look up and underneath. A wardrobe that's 70.86 inches tall gets use out of wall a 31 inch dresser leaves empty, and a storage bed puts the gap under the mattress to work. Clear out first, though. Utah State University Extension warns against rushing out for more bins, and once the extra stuff is gone plenty of people find they don't need them.
What Are the Best Types of Storage Furniture for a Bedroom?
It comes down to four pieces, and the order depends on what's piling up. Folded clothes go in a dresser. Small bedside things are a nightstand drawer's job, and anything that creases is better off hanging in a wardrobe or armoire. Duvets end up in a bench or under the bed.
Bookcases are lovely for showing things off but hopeless at hiding them. If you can only buy one piece this year, match it to the biggest pile on the bed. We'd leave the bench until last. It takes floor at the end of the bed, and that's often where people walk.
What Is the Best Organizer for a Small Bedroom?
We'd go with a dresser and put dividers in its drawers. Socks, underwear and belts each get a section, and the room ends up with one piece of furniture instead of six small organizers on the floor.
The catch is fit. A 57 inch dresser needs close to five feet of clear wall and about 36 inches in front for the drawers. If the room can't spare that, use two drawer nightstands and the space under the bed first. Tape the outline down and walk around it for a day. Bump into it twice and you'll know it's too big.
What Are Some Cheap Bedroom Storage Ideas?
Clearing out is free, and of everything here it makes the most difference. After that we'd pick up drawer dividers, which let one 24 inch drawer hold socks on one side and underwear on the other. Under the bed, lidded bins that match the height of the gap are a good home for off season clothes. Most people never use the back of the bedroom door, yet a few hooks there will hold a robe and a couple of bags.
None of this replaces a dresser if folded clothes have nowhere to go. Buy that first and add the small stuff later.
Are Drawers or Open Shelves Better for Hiding Clutter?
Drawers, easily. Whatever is behind a drawer front stays hidden, jumble and all. Put the same things on an open shelf and every one of them is on view, so shelves only look tidy with a few nice things on them, like some books and a plant or two.
A wall shelf above the dresser is still worth having for display, since it uses no floor at all. Just keep the everyday stuff, cables and paperwork and the odd receipt, in drawers. If a shelf needs straightening more than once a week, whatever's on it should probably live in a drawer.
Are Storage Beds Worth It?
They are once the walls are full. All that space under the mattress is already there, and closing it in costs you no extra floor.
Pick the type by how often you'll be in there. Side drawers suit pajamas and the sheets you swap each week, but they need clear floor beside the bed, and a drawer that opens into a wall is useless. A lift up platform holds more but takes more effort to open, which is fine for bedding you dig out twice a year. For anyone keeping their current bed, a bench at the foot of it does a similar job.
Do Dressers and Wardrobes Need to Be Anchored to the Wall?
Yes. A tall dresser can tip forward with a few drawers pulled out, or with a child using them as steps. CPSC requires clothing storage units made after September 1, 2023 to ship with an anti tip device, and the agency says its Anchor It campaign contributed to a nearly 50 percent drop in tip over injuries and deaths in the U.S.
Use the kit in the box. Put the bracket screws into a stud if you can find one, then pull hard on the strap. We do it on assembly day, while the drawers are still empty and the dresser slides easily.
